FAQs
How do i set up and book an initial phone call or first appointment?
Please try a free initial 30 minute introductory zoom session or phone call.
To get started please make contact using the menu form or you can email [email protected] or telephone or text 07525 456544 in complete confidence.
What is the first session like and how will the therapy proceed?
We can begin by gathering some information about yourself and your background and some life history. You can open up as much or as little as you want. Some history-taking and assessment is helpful but you have a right to privacy and you consent to only what you want to divulge.
EMDR & IFS can work even if you don't want to disclose the issue (say, abuse) and we can process any trauma without you explicitly discussing it. Often there may be shame and fear involved so this is wholly understandable and we can work with your preferences and need for privacy.
How much do sessions cost?
Please can you contact me for full information on trauma-focused therapy with EMDR and Internal Family Systems' therapy.
It may be possible to offer a reduced cost if i have the space. Due to the demand sessions are likely to be £90 but please check with me.
Thank you.
How long are therapy sessions?
Therapy sessions typically last 50 minutes as per the conventions of weekly therapy. Some sessions with this type of therapy benefit from longer sessions to go deeper and work with processing trauma. So we can do 90 minute sessions.
Most people attend online weekly or twice weekly, or fortnightly. We can titrate the sessions but it is better to begin weekly so we can regulate and build trust in your nervous system.
Is the therapy confidential?
Yes, all therapy sessions are confidential. Your privacy is respected and protected at all times. I adhere to British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy's Code of Practice. Please also see the Ethics section on the menu here. You have a right to boundaries, to confidentiality, to privacy and to your human rights.
Will costs be covered by insurance
At the moment East Kent Therapy doesn't offer therapy through insurance companies. However you can receive an invoice to submit for your insurance cover.
What video conferencing software do you use?
In nearly all cases we use Zoom which is an excellent and easy way to have sessions. Other software can be used for mapping of your 'parts' and for EMDR bilateral stimulation if you request it. Normally we can do tapping to process trauma.
How many sessions will I need?
It really depends on what you want to work on and how deep you want to go.
Normally people make good progress with around 12 sessions and some cases (around 50%) clients will stay longer, which often includes breaks for holidays. Depending on the severity of your issues, you may stay for six months to a year or so. Some people stay longer.
Trauma therapy tends to be 'briefer' than traditional analysis as it is more focused as a 'treatment'. I have no interest in 'dragging out' the therapy unnecessarily and it is unethical to do so.
What is your cancellation policy?
All i ask in terms of your commitment to therapy is to give 24 hours notice if you wish to cancel your session. Otherwise the fee is payable.
Do I have to tell you everything that happened in great detail as i don’t want to go over it all again…
Yes we can do it 'blind to therapist' without retraumatising or bringing it all up again. You can give little 'headlines' of incidents and we can do bits at a time at your own pace, with no judgment.
